What Natural Hydrogen Is

Natural (or geologic) hydrogen is molecular hydrogen (H2) that’s generated through natural processes within the Earth’s crust rather than industrial or chemical means. It’s a clean, low-carbon, low-cost primary energy source.

Generated naturally, deep underground

Uses minimal land, water and energy to produce

Once found, the process to produce and handle hydrogen is safe and well understood

Low-cost, low-carbon energy

A high-cost secondary energy source, ex. green hydrogen

Does not require/release CO2

Does not require fracking

Does not rely on subsidies to be competitive

What Natural Hydrogen Isn’t

This isn’t green hydrogen; an energy-intensive process that uses electrolytic hydrogen production to split water molecules to release H2. Although clean, this process is incredibly inefficient. Geologic hydrogen also does not require large land, water, or energy resources such as wind, solar or hydro.
